2024 election results out!!
Vote counting is currently underway for India’s 2024 Lok Sabha election. This election, the largest in the world, could prove to be one of the most significant. Voters are selecting 543 members for the lower house of Parliament, who will serve a five-year term.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling Hindu nationalist party seems to be falling short of securing a majority in the early vote count. If this trend continues, it would be a remarkable setback for the populist leader, who has never depended on coalition partners to govern.
Despite this, Modi’s party is still expected to form the government, with Modi returning as prime minister for an unprecedented third consecutive term. The National Democratic Alliance, led by Modi, is leading in approximately 290 constituencies, surpassing the 272-seat threshold needed for a majority. Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alone is leading in 242 seats.
However, forming a coalition would weaken Modi’s power as a strongman leader, who previously secured landslide victories for his party in the 2014 and 2019 elections.
In this scenario, the BJP would likely become heavily reliant on the support of its allies, making them critical players in policymaking and government formation. “This would be uncharted territory for both India and the prime minister,” said Milan Vaishnav, director of the South Asia Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
Since coming to power in 2014, Modi’s BJP has governed in a coalition but has always maintained a majority on its own.
